Ten Things You Need to Know about UFC 100 – Number 8: Stitch Duran!

Andy Samuelson at the Las Vegas Sun is offering up ten things you need to know about UFC 100. Number eight on the list is Jacob Stitch Duran.

It is an outstanding article with many interesting points. Stitch talks of the two instances when he was a little queasy (not bad considering he’s been involved in thousands of stomach-turning situations), one of them dealt with a ridiculous amount of blood, and the other didn’t have any blood at all.

Of the first situation, Jonathan Goulet vs. Jay Hieron at UFC Fight Night 2, Stitch said, “...I knew I was in trouble when I applied the final solution of Vaseline and Adrenaline Chloride 1:1000 (used to constrict blood vessels) and the blood gushed right through the Vaseline. They continued fighting, but by the time it was over both fighters had blood from the top of their heads to their bottom of their feet. That was the bloodiest one ever.”

The second situation came when Corey Hill snapped his leg at UFC Fight for the Troops last December. Stitch was of course one of the first in the Octagon, saying of the horrific moment, “I’m holding Corey by the shoulder and he’s asking me ‘Stitch what happened?’ And I’m trying to comfort him but also tell him that he just broke his leg badly. I’m telling him to go ahead and scream as loud as he wants because it was an ugly, ugly situation. Finally I had to just look away because his leg was freaking me out so bad.”

Stitch also touches upon the bond that develops between the fighters and him due to the intense, trauma-filled situations. And you can learn a little bit about Stitch’s history in the article.

On an interesting side note regarding Corey Hill's opponent during the leg break. It happened against Dale Hartt who just fought at UFC 99 in Germany. After the fight he came to Stitch and asked if he'd check out his swollen cheek. Stitch found an air bubble, but when he pushed on it, it hurt Dale badly. Stitch thought he might have broken a bone so he directed him to see Dr. Davidson who was cageside. Sure enough, he did break the orbital bone. Stitch is valuable before, during, and even after the fights!
